Colour is the fastest thing a brand communicates — faster than the logo, faster than the tagline. Get it wrong and a brand can feel untrustworthy or forgettable before anyone reads a single word.

Colour carries meaning before words do

Blue reads as stable and trustworthy — it's why banks and tech companies lean on it. Warm reds and oranges read as energetic and urgent — common in food and retail. None of this is arbitrary; it's built on associations audiences already carry, and a palette that fights those associations has to work much harder to be believed.

Start from restraint, not variety

The strongest brand palettes are usually small: one dominant colour, one supporting colour, and a neutral to balance them. Trying to represent the whole business in a rainbow of colours usually just makes the brand harder to recognise at a glance.

Test it in black and white first

If a design still reads clearly with the colour removed — the hierarchy still makes sense, the important element still stands out — the colour choice is doing its job as an accent, not a crutch propping up a weak layout.

A practical way to choose

  • Pick one colour that matches the emotional tone you want the brand to carry
  • Add one contrasting colour for calls-to-action, used sparingly so it stays effective
  • Choose a neutral (off-white, warm grey, near-black) rather than pure white or pure black
  • Check the palette against real backgrounds — packaging, signage, a phone screen — not just a swatch

Final thoughts

A good palette doesn't need to be original to be effective — it needs to be consistent, deliberate, and legible everywhere the brand shows up.
